We are delighted to be welcoming English club AFC Liverpool to Spanish soil today as they take on our Spanish football academy’s partner club Alicante City.
Fresh off the back of achieving promotion to the sixth tier of Spanish football, Alicante City are looking to get their pre-season off to a flying start as they welcome English opposition to the Estadio Inmaculada for the first time. AFC Liverpool, on the other hand, will be looking to prove the strength of the English non-league game with a big result on the continent.
Both clubs are relevant newcomers but both have very unique histories. AFC Liverpool were founded in 2008 by 1,000 Liverpool fans and continue to be a fan-owned club to this day. The club has competed in the ninth and tenth-tiers of English football since its inception and finished third in the North West Counties League Division One North last season, just missing out on promotion.
Alicante City were formed just last year but are already making great strides in Spanish football. Managed by former La Liga player David de la Hera and coached by former Crystal Palace coach Philip Phillipou, they finished second in the Segunda Regional Valenciana last season, securing promotion to the sixth-tier for the 2019/20 season. They club remarkably had 15 different nationalities represent them with the team able to call upon the best players from the Soccer Smart Academy which attracts players from all across the world.
One of Alicante’s star men last season was Carlos ‘Coco’ Carrasco. The 26-year-old winger has previously played in the third-tier in Spain, known as Segunda B, and also played in the second division in the Netherlands as well as a spell in Iceland.
Ahead of the game, AFC Liverpool manager Chris Anderson had this to say: “I’m buzzing for the match! Being manager of AFC and part-owner of Alicante City I am delighted to be able to make this game happen and cannot wait to see how the two sides compare against each other. Of course it is a friendly but both sides have big seasons coming up so we will be using it as vital preparation as we target promotion again this season.”
Alicante City coach Phillipou is also excited for this evening’s match: “We're looking forward to hosting AFC Liverpool, an excellent challenge for us and hopefully a long term connection! We know that English teams like to play at a high tempo, the perfect test for us in our opening pre-season game.”
Several AFC Liverpool fans have made the journey to support their team and Alicante City will also have the backing of locals and academy players.
The match will be live-streamed and is free to watch on MyCujoo. The match kicks off at 6pm local time or 5pm in the UK. Click the button below to be taken to the stream.
